Ophelia dies.
Kings demand marriage to their lovely daughters.
Enchanted princes howl like beasts.
Young men live quite penniless.

Tricksters roam the world at large,
helping themselves with silver tongues.
Entertainment comes with the price of pain, dancing in red-hot slippers.

Grendel screams.
Rapunzel dreams.
Evening brings the big bad wolf closer.
Ashes stain pretty girls’ cheeks.
They all wait for ever after.

To my wife on her birthdayBetween the warm
Intercourse
Of our life together,
Married years of comfort
And support,
I occasionally glimpse,
in a quiet shift of focus
The same girl that stopped
my breathing
across the room,
When you were a stranger,
beautiful and exotic,
And I knew with a mysterious certainty
That I had found you
after aeons apart .
I keep the moment, fierce
and sweet, savouring the tang
To feed it piece by piece
to the steady flame.

The DamselYour eyes will not know me at first sight,
but your heart has me memorized,
just as mine remembers you.

Even if it takes eternity and then some
I will suffer this waiting,
a task so much crueler than any journey could ever be.

For you,
any trial is worth it.

For you,
I wait.

Death of a shrewSmall scrap of life
with glossy fur
improbable snout
neat little feet,
you were rescued
from a snake
and you nestled in
our warm hands,
flattening yourself
to fit into my fist,
snout peeping out.
My son bustled around,
found a box,
made plans for a cosy home.
We left you under a warm light
and in the morning you
curled into his hand
still alive but very quiet.
I tried to get a drop of warm
milk into your mouth and
you swallowed, I thought.
Just after my son left for school
you stretched once in my hand
and died.
Nothing left but to find
a matchbox for your burial.

I found
Soft verges
In place of hard
Curbs.

Sweet-delighted I
Am mazed in you,
And dare not tread
Unless gently
Between ugly shards
Of former selves.

You are of fresh softness
Sweet warmness,
And the lusty kicks
Of embryonic self
In me, make my heart
Stop with gladness.

Lost onesWe are the lost ones
steeped in forgetfulness,
wandering untrodden ways,
crawling on the periphery.

The centre is missing,
and all our memories
only image the emptiness.

There is dust in my heart,
a keen wind in my head,
the future trembles,
the past has gone.

Would I lay down my world
for the future
in a pair of eyes?

The spirit ache cannot be borne,
the spirit aches to be born.

I used to write all my comments as poems, but then after 8 years off ill, I started work again. I am so tired at the moment I get in from work and fall asleep

The pleasure is all mine I enjoyed both the photograph and the poem

Composing poems is always a challenge for me, and mostly insurmountable when I'm too tired. I certainly understand the need for rest! I hope you're sleeping enough & well.
